St. Jude Children’s Hospital: Constantly Sharing New Research

St. Jude Children’s Hospital is well-known for the significant contributions it makes to the field of cancer research. In keeping with the organization’s priority of sharing research and treatment discoveries, St. Jude researchers published 775 articles in peer-reviewed journals in 2012, and 800 articles in 2013, which averages a new discovery made public every 11 hours.

Furthermore, the hospital has released the most extensive human cancer genome data ever made public. This information has been made available to aid cancer researchers as well as scientists studying other diseases.

In addition to peer-reviewed articles and data, the hospital runs an online portal called St. Jude Cure4Kids that allows scientists and researchers worldwide to share their research and collaborate on projects. More than 38,000 health care workers use the service.

A Brush with Kindness – A Habitat for Humanity Program

With more than 1,500 local branches in the United States and more than 70 affiliated organizations worldwide, Habitat for Humanity utilizes volunteer labor and donations to build and repair houses for families in need. Among Habitat’s various programs is A Brush with Kindness, a program that provides eligible homeowners with exterior services, such as landscaping, painting, and minor repairs. Sponsored and underwritten by Valspar Paint, A Brush with Kindness makes no-interest loans to homeowners to fund the projects. The program aims not only to preserve existing affordable housing, but to revitalize neighborhoods and encourage community connections.

Habitat for Humanity’s National Women Build Week

Lisabeth Christy is a professional photographer based out of Washington, DC. In addition to her photography work, Lisabeth Christy contributes to a number of charitable organizations. In 2005, she worked with Habitat for Humanity to build homes for individuals in need.

Each year, during the week leading up to Mother’s Day, Habitat for Humanity hosts National Women Build Week. During this time, women involved with Habitat for Humanity are encouraged to devote at least one day of the week to working against poverty housing. The week before Mother’s Day was chosen by the organization to emphasize the overwhelming number of parents, children, and families in need of permanent shelter. Events are held all over the United States, ranging from Coeur d’Alene , Idaho, to Miami, Florida, and local events can be found on the Habitat for Humanity website. National Women Build Week is sponsored by Lowe’s. Lowe’s, which has contributed more than $40 million to the organization.
